What is the County Treasurer’s Job?
The County Treasurer is both the county’s tax collector and the overseer of county’s funds and investments. The largest local county revenues include real estate tax, car rental tax, hotel tax, beverage tax, and dog licensing fees. The Treasurer’s Office collects and enforces collection of these revenues. The Treasurer’s Office runs all the payroll for both County employees and County retirees (that’s almost 12,000 people getting paid per month!), supervises money into and out of the County’s bank accounts, and handles investments of money on-hand.
Additionally, the Treasurer always serves on the Retirement Board of Allegheny County (membership includes 5,000 retirees and over 6,000 current employees, with the plan having over $900 million in assets), the Investment Board, and the Depository Board.
The Treasurer’s Office has approximately 60-70 employees, a budget of over $8 million per year, and is located in the Allegheny County Courthouse.
